Denise Beaty

8th grader
Roosevelt Middle School

When asked who her heroes are, Denise Beaty is quick to name her grandfather who tells her she is going to become somebody because she has the brains. She adds “The people in the Champion City Scholars Program are also my heroes because they looked outside themselves to help me out of a life of poverty.”

Denise is one of the newest group of students chosen to participate in the Champion City Scholars Program, which began in 2004, as a partnership with the Springfield City Schools. The program guarantees students who maintain good grades, regular attendance and stay out of trouble a tuition-free education at Clark State upon graduation from high school. The program currently has more than 130 Scholars as well as a team of volunteer mentors who provide a support system and help expose them to a variety of enrichment experiences.

“I have learned to be a better person, to be more patient and that I need to take my time getting my school work done because it really matters now.” Denise wants to use her education to help people and is considering the field of nursing.
