A Gift To The Annual Fund Supports Student Scholarships

Our students are maneuvering around many barriers this year as construction continues on the Sara T. Landess Learning and Technology Center. But our students are used to overcoming hurdles.

Take Carrie, for example. She was a high school dropout who married young and had two children. She was afraid to leave her abusive relationship because her parents had died, she was undereducated, and she had nowhere to go. Her self-esteem was very low, and she ended up in a homeless shelter with her children. She began to worry that she would lose her children because of her inability to provide for them, so she filed for divorce and decided to go to college.

Here’s what she says now. “Since I have been attending classes here at Clark State I have grown tremendously. I have a renewed confidence in myself that I can do something good for society and provide a good role model for my children, who talk of going to college when they grow up. I have used my drafting skills to draw plans for the Winter Festival that my children’s school puts on every year. I am really finding my place in society now and feel that my input is valuable.”

She has been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the college’s academic honor society, and is an algebra tutor in the Student Success Center. Carrie will finish at Clark State in the spring and start her new life. You helped to make that life possible with your scholarship contribution. Now she can improve her life and the lives of her children, as well as fill a local employer’s need for someone trained in engineering technologies. Then she will come off the welfare rolls forever.

As one of our other scholarship recipients said, “We’re not looking for a handout, just a helping hand.” We ask you to consider a gift to support student scholarships.

With 85 percent of our graduates remaining in the area, your gift will build a stronger community.

Thank you for your consideration!
